Schedule
You will do light housekeeping tasks for the host family. You do this no more than 8 hours a day and for a maximum of 30 hours a week. You have 2 days off each week.
Au pair and the host family will make a schedule for all 7 days of the week. Au pair and the family sign this schedule. Changes to the schedule should be agreed by agency also.
If host family is refusing to abide by schedule the Au pair can inform the agency.
Room
Au pair live and be registered in the same address as that of host family. Au pair should have an independent room.
Vacation
Au pair is entitled to 2 weeks of vacation in 1 year period. If the period of stay is less the vacation period is also proportionately less. Pocket money will be paid during the vacation period. The vacation period can be chosen in advance by Au pair in consultation with host family. The vacation period of host family cannot be imposed as the vacation period of Au pair.
Public Holidays
Public holidays are by default not holidays for Au pairs. However Au pair can discuss with host family to give it as a free day. For some agencies in their contract its mentioned that public holiday are also holiday for Au pair. Public holidays of 2024 are

Language Course
Language course is not mandatory for Au pair program. But most Au pairs get a language course paid by host family. Learning Dutch language is also a part of Cultural exchange. Some Au pairs learn English. List of language schools can be found in Activity page.
The light household tasks of Au pair can include

• Loading and unloading the dishwasher

• Keeping the kitchen in order and general tidying up
• Shopping for light groceries

• Packing away laundry/clothes

• Taking out garbage
• Walking and feeding pets
• Watering plants and taking care of plants/flowers
• Making and changing beds
Tasks NOT to be done by Au pairs
• Cleaning the windows
• Mopping and cleaning floors for more than a room
• Cleaning cars, bicycles and motors
• Cleaning toilets and bathrooms which are not used by the au pair
• Cleaning animal shelters
• Shopping heavy groceries
FAQ
My host asking me to tasks for host parents? Is Au pair supposed to do only tasks only for children?
In Netherlands IND does not say that Au pair is only to look after children. Light household tasks can be for anyone in host family. In the end the the tasks of Au pair will depend on what is agreed in the contract or in weekly schedule. In few other countries Au pair is childcare specific; but not in Netherlands.
What if the schedule is not followed?
There are few cases when host family refuses to follow the schedule. Au pair is forced to work 30-70 hours. Au pair is given heavy work or full house cleaning tasks.
a) Talk with the family to resolve the issue
b) If previous step did not succeed, talk to the agency to resolve the issue
