Defnition
Au pair program is a cultural exchange program. It is not a job. An Au pair stays with a family in Netherlands and help them with light household tasks and look after children. In return the family provide free accomodation, food and pocket money. Also in Netherlands Au pair get free health insurance from government.
The Au pair program is regulated by IND which is the Immigration and Naturalisation agency of the Dutch government. IND process the visa applications and also provide recognition to Au pair agencies. Au pair program in Netherlands is for maximum 1 year and cannot be extended. Most Non-EU Au pairs come on a 1 year visa. There are EU Au pairs coming for short term. To be an Au pair in Netherlands without an agency is not legal.
Criteria
Au pair age should be between 18-25 years. At the time of application Au pair should not have been 26 years old. (Untill 2022 age upto 30 was possible)
Should be unmarried and no children.
Should not have worked for same host family before. Should have no family relation with host family
Au pair can get 340 euros pocket money every month. Au pair cannot do any other job for money or for free.

Find Host family
An Au pair candidate can find a host family directly in the Netherlands or apply to a recognized Au pair agency. This are the options
Find a host family directly through websites Aupairworld.com or NannyAupair.com. You will have to create a profile in those websites. Making a profile video increases the chance of finding a host family.
Find a host family through Facebook groups. One of the main group is Au pairs in Netherlands 2024.
Apply at the website of Au pair agency.
If a family or agency is interested they will contact you and do online interviews with you. You will also need to fill in some application forms and provide documents including passport and birth certificate to the agency. Agency also interviews the Host family and make sure they have enough income and an extra room in their home for hosting an Au pair.
Sometimes Au pairs also apply through intermediary agencies in home countries and pay them money. But it does not always guarantee that you can be an Au pair in Netherlands.
Visa Process
For Non EU Au pairs visa is required. Visa application is done by Au pair agency. Host family cannot apply directly for an Au pair visa. Normally the status of the visa application will be known within a month.
Agency help in booking appointment with Dutch embassy in home country of Au pair to collect the visa.
Flight Tickets
The cost of flight ticket can be put by the family or Au pair or it can be shared.
Costs
Au pair agency cannot collect more than 34 euros from an Au pair. In general agencies do not collect money from Au pairs.
Filipino Au pairs
For Filipino Au pairs the host family need to do an extra step. Host family need to send the contract and other documents as a registered mail to embassy in Philipinnes. Host family also need to state that they will pay for the flight ticket. The authorities in Philippines need to approve this request. Then only the Au pair is allowed to travel out of Philippines.

FAQ
I am above 26 years. Is it possible to be a Nanny or housemaid in Netherlands?
In Netherlands there is no visa for Nanny or maid. In few other European countries its possible to apply for Au pair visa until the age of 30.
I am above 30 years. Is it possible to get a visa in EU?
For people above age 30 there is no Au pair visa. There is also no work visa for Nanny or Cleaner in most EU countries. Work visas are normally given to people in IT and higher level technical jobs.

An Agency that i met online is asking me to send money. Is it legitimate?
There is a high chance that it is a scam. In Netherlands an agency can charge uptp 35 euros fro Au pair.
I am from Non EU country. Is it possible to be an a Au pair in Italy or Spain?
Italy and Spain do not have Au pair program and so do not have Au pair visa. Student visa is possible in those countries.
