There are two types of Insurance for an Au pair
Au pair Insurance
It covers the emergency medical expenses. It covers the liability of Au pair in host family home. The luggage of Au pair is insured, not only during the stay and while travelling.
This insurance is not mandatory. Many non EU Au pairs have it. This has to be taken before Au pair travel to Netherlands.
It cost around 450 euros a year. Its mostly paid by host family.
The coverage depends on the insurance policy. Providers include ISIS OOM JOHO Allianz
Health Insurance
It is a mandatory insurance. Not having the health insurance for more than 4 months can get you a fine of 497 Euros.
Au pair or host family can apply for if after getting BSN number and bank account. The insurance provider will put the start date of insurance as the registration date at municipality.
Health insurance will cover the costs at doctors clinic and at hospital. There are few medicines that are not covered by medical insurance.
It cost 130-150 euros a month. Good thing is that, its possible to get the money back from government as healthcare allowance.
For dental, additional insurance package need to be bought.
Own contribution: The first 338 euros incurred for medicine in a year may not be reimbursed by health care provider. The doctor fee is always reimbursed.
The registration date at municipality will be taken as the starting date of health insurance. Even if you apply late for health insurance you will have to pay for it from the municipality registration date.

Healthcare Allowance
Its possible to get Healthcare allowance from tax department. For that Au pair need to apply at this website - www.toeslagen.nl
In Dutch its called zorgtoeslag. To apply online for Health allowance you also need to have a Digiid.
The health allowance amount changes every year. For 2024 its 123 euros. For 2025 its 131 euros. Even if you pay lower amount for health insurance you still get full health allowance.
It will take few weeks for them to process your request. The money is paid only by 20th of a month. Health insurance premium is taken from your bank account at the 1st of a month and Healthcare allowance will come to your account only be the 20th of the month.
Healthcare system
If you get sick you can go to general practitioner(Huisarts). If your general practitioner cannot solve your problem, you can be referred to a specialist doctor in hospital. In general you have to wait for 2-4 weeks to get a appointment with a specialist. You cannot directly walk-in to a specialist doctor as in many other countries.
You can google search for huisarts in your location and register with them. You could also ask your host family to register you with their huisarts.
If there is urgency in night its possible to contact Huisartsenpost near you. Google search to find nearest Huisartsenpost.
In case of an emergency situation like an accident or unable to breath, its possible to call 112 for help. They can send an ambulance to your location.
Dentists
The Dental treatment in Netherlands is expensive. It can be 5 to 10 times expensive than in Asia. However if you go to dental college you can get at lower price. Here the treatment is done by Dental students under the supervision of a dentist. There is a dental college ACTA in Amsterdam Zuid.
